SNL and Tina Fey have me in stitches...

I was out of town all weekend so I haven't posted and it will probably take me awhile to get something up on Monday. In the meantime, I'll leave you with a political link that I find hilarious, Saturday Night Live's opening skit from Saturday:

Here's part of the actual interview just for comparison purposes. I think Tina Fey has GOT IT:

Oh one more interesting video. The group Alaskans For Truth held a rally in Anchorage on Saturday. This is what the residents of Alaska think of Palin. Here's a slideshow video of the signs that Alaska they made and held during the rally.

Be back Monday!

Movies and softball and voting OH MY...

Good Mooorning!

Today the kids' school is having movie night. They are REALLY excited. This event is held the last Friday of September every year. Usually it's a picnic type thing because they do it on the front lawn of the school. We all bring blankets to put on the ground and the PTA makes popcorn from a real popcorn machine and it's a lot of fun. It's been raining for the past couple of days so they are going to have the movie in the school cafeteria. I'm thinking this might be a bit more chaotic and slightly less fun. The elements of being on a blanket, in the dark, outside, watching a movie are what make it fun. Sitting on folding chairs in the cafeteria, not so much. I do always enjoy being at the kids' school and seeing them with their school friends.

Matt's got softball tonight. So far we haven't been able to go watch him play which is disappointing. He and the kids have had conflicting schedules. Yes I spend a significant amount of time organizing their schedules! Hopefully we'll get to go next week.

That's what my Friday afternoon is expected to look like...

Political Links of the day:
Time is getting scarce. If you haven't registered to vote yet, PLEASE do at Rock the Vote It's really easy. If you've never voted in any election before, don't be hesitant. It isn't hard and you will feel so good once you've done it. Different states have different voting methods. I'm sure you can look yours up online. Here in Virginia, ours is automated. They couldn't make it easier for you. I walk in and tell them who I am, they look me up in the big book of registered voters, they hand me a swipey card, I go to an open machine, swipe my card, touch screen my choices, then hand my card to a volunteer on the way out. Easy Peasy. Every state, and sometimes even within a state, it's different. There are always plenty of volunteers to help you. Remember not to wear any clothing or accessories that note a particular party or candidate's name as you will be asked to remove them prior to entering the voting site.

If you're eager to hear the debate tonight please sign this petition by 12pm EST today (Friday). Sorry for the late notice, but I just found it. I think it's important that we hear what the candidates have to say in a debate forum.

For your viewing pleasure, here's the current snapshot of the electoral vote map:

It looks pretty red, but it's actually 286 Obama to 252 McCain.

That's it for me - enjoy your Friday!

Ten...

Ten things you may not know about me...

1. I hate cheese. There are a couple of extremely minor exceptions such as pizza but for the most part YUCK!

2. I have a terrible terrible sweet tooth.

3. I have to put my left shoe or sock on first. Have to.

4. I love milk but won't drink it anywhere but home. Restaurant or carton milk just gives me the heebie jeebies.

5. Coke is my favorite beverage in the whole wide world. It is best from a fountain with a straw. It is worst from straight from a can.

6. I wanted to name Zack Riley but Matt didn't like it. My dear friend Mindi waited until I was set on the name Zack and then asked if she could have Riley. Isn't that sweet? Riley was born two months after Zack and both boys, of course, fit their names.

7. I want to be a librarian when I grow up.

8. I'm easily suckered into volunteering. Red Cross, American Cancer Society, MWR, Soccer Mom, Basketball Mom, PTA, etc etc... I rarely go out looking for this stuff, but ask me and I'll probably volunteer.

9. I read A LOT. Books, blogs, newspapers, news websites, web forums, etc and so forth. It's a good thing I'm a fast reader. I am also incapable of doing one thing at a time so I'm typically reading and... working, doing homework, watching tv, watching soccer practice... you get the idea. I currently have over a hundred books on my library hold list. I stop at the library at least three times per week to pick up more books.

10. Food must be HOT. Unless it must be COLD. There is no lukewarm.

That's ten. Now, see down there, where it says comments? Click there and in a comment tell me how many of these you already knew. Perhaps I wasn't creative enough?

Political Link of the Day:

Today was hard. Do I post about the economic crisis? The maybe cancellation of the debates? Everyday there's so much to absorb. I've noticed that I've been hearing a lot of speculation about who will do what to our taxes. So I decided to post a chart that will show what each candidate intends to do with our taxes, this is from the Washington Post:

While yes, Obama is intending to raise taxes for anyone who makes over $600,000, he will have a stronger affect on 60% of Americans by lowering their taxes more than McCain will. Unless you make more than $600,000, and if you do I'm surprised you're reading my blog, Obama is your man!

Big sticks...

Do you ever see something when you're driving along and want to stop and ask "what the heck?" I usually drive the same way to work everyday. Towards the end of my commute, I cut through a very large neighborhood that is at one end let's say sketchy and at the other fairly nice. In between the two there is a large park that in the afternoons, when there are a lot of teenagers hanging around, looks intimidating, but in the mornings there are a lot of walkers. I see four or five walkers each morning and without fail at least three of them are walking with a large stick of some sort. None of these are walking sticks. They look more like beat-someone-over-the-head sticks. I've noticed this for about a year now and I just can't understand. Are they walking with sticks for protection? This just doesn't make much sense to me. I can't imagine if I were heading out the door and said to Matt "gotta go get my big stick so I can take a walk" that he'd say "okay, have fun". I'm guessing he wouldn't let me walk wherever it is that requires the big stick. I'm also wondering if the big stick is the best way to go protection wise. Even if this is a dog problem, I'm thinking that pepper spray is a better option. It's easier to carry and you have a better chance of defending yourself with a quick squirt of pepper spray to either dog or human than you do with a stick upside the head. Surely three out of five people would have considered this. Wouldn't they? It boggles my mind. What other reason would all these people be walking with sticks?

The kids haven't been up to too much this week. Skyler finally started bringing homework home. I like that her teacher gives her the week's homework on Monday. She ripped right through all her sheets thinking she had to have them all done that afternoon. I had to slow her down. There was one sheet where she had to write her name (D'Nealian method) multiple times. I wanted her to erase and try again and she had a fit. Well yesterday afternoon the next door neighbor who is twelve came over and helped her. They sat together for a good thirty minutes just writing. I'm hiring this kid for the next twelve years! I'm telling you Skyler would do anything she asked and there was no kicking and screaming. I sat at the same table and worked with Zack and kept an eye on them but it was HEAVEN!

I've been thinking I would have, at the end of my posts, just a little political link each day. I'll just do it until the election is over. This is what sparked my interest today:

McCain Aide’s Firm Was Paid by Freddie Mac . Veeeery Innnnteresting...

Oh one more thing... I can see from my stat tracker that I have a regular reader from Ketchikan, Alaska {big wave}. (Did you all know that I could see you? ;-) ) I don't mean to totally call you out but I'm really curious to know what you think about this Bridge to Nowhere business. What's the local consensus? Can I pick your brain? Email me at amanda dot molnar at gmail dot com.

That's it for this morning!

Changing the rules...

It seems that those who comment like my little political commentary. I'll keep it brief with something that had me alternately pissed off and laughing at the insanity this week.

It seems that the GOP has requested that the rules for the Oct 2nd VP debates be changed for Sarah. Poor Baby isn't quite up to a REAL debate. You can google this and find quotes from all over the internet but I have chosen to quote the NY Times:

At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates. McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

McCain advisers said they were only somewhat concerned about Ms. Palin’s debating skills compared with those of Mr. Biden, who has served six terms in the Senate, or about his chances of tripping her up. Instead, they say, they wanted Ms. Palin to have opportunities to present Mr. McCain’s positions, rather than spending time talking about her own experience or playing defense.

SERIOUSLY?

Just imagine what the GOP would do with this if we were changing the debate rules for someone on the Dem side...

Here's to imaginary friends no longer being imaginary...

Friday night I was thrilled to finally meet someone who I've been chatting with online for about a year and a half now. My friend and her family were in town visiting their family and I invited them over for dinner. We had an absolutely wonderful visit and I'm truly sorry that they aren't local. I was a bit nervous at first! Despite the fact that I know all sorts of information about this person, and have exchanged coupons, Christmas cards, pictures, and life stories, I had never met her and it's still a bit strange to be meeting people you know from the internet! There was nothing to be concerned about. Our families enjoyed chatting and sitting on my floor playing with toys. I know how to entertain huh? I'm glad to have a "new" friend that we'll hopefully see whenever they are in town!

Let's see, what else went on this weekend? Soccer of course. Skyler and Matt had the early game (always). I think the coaches work harder than the kids. They do have a great time and the kids seem to love Matt. Zack's game was a couple of hours later. We had a BLAST watching them play. The kids have really got some skill now and the parents are just so enjoying cheering from the sidelines this season. This week the teams were pretty evenly matched as there was a lot of action but not a lot of scoring. I was really impressed that one of the kids from the other team walked up to Zack after it was all over and said "hey man, good game" and shook hands with him. We make them ALL shake hands at the end, but I love that they're getting older and respecting the other team's skill and searching each other out for a kind word. Sniffle, sniffle, THEY'RE GROWING UP, SOB!

The rest of the weekend was low key. The kids played with their friends in the neighborhood, I did a bit of grocery shopping, Matt watched the Ryder Cup. There was a lot of hooting and hollering so I think the U.S. won.

Oh and I should comment that previously on my blog I swore that I wasn't going to start posting a bunch of political stuff. Christina (Hi Christina!) called me on it when I did just that. The truth is, there's what? 46 days left? I don't think I'm going to be able to help myself. I won't make a daily thing out of it, but I'm sure there will be other things I'll have to post about. I'm fairly obsessed with this election. I will try to control myself though.

LAST but not least, I find myself as a Rep for Avon's Mark products. Teenagers in particular love this stuff. It's fun and fairly cheap. Check it out: http://amolnar.mymarkstore.com/

Taxes...

Lately I'm hearing a lot of talk about how McCain is going to cut our taxes and Obama is going to raise them. I feel the need to post a quote from a CNN article.

According to a CNN fact check, Obama's tax plan would increase taxes in 2009 on the wealthiest 20 percent of households, while offering tax cuts for the other 80 percent. The largest increases would be on the top 1 percent of earners, according to analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research group whose staff of experts includes former economic advisers to the White House and Congress under both Republicans and Democrats.

By comparison, the Tax Policy Center analysis says McCain would offer tax cuts across the board. Those at the top end of the scale would get the biggest percentage cuts under McCain, while households with the lowest incomes would receive the largest percentage cuts under Obama's plan.

McCain is going to cut taxes for his buddies, not the rest of us.

That is all.

Happy Face...

Two nights ago we were sitting around the dinner table enjoying a game of "Best Part of Your Day" and Zack was describing to me some mischief that he and his friend Kyle had gotten into that afternoon at Kyle's house. As the story went on and my eyebrows raised higher and higher on my forehead, Zack paused and said "What?" as though he didn't already know that I wasn't pleased. I pointed to my face and replied "Is THIS my happy face?" I went on to explain why I didn't like that particular behaviour. Later, Matt was instructing Skyler on how to finish clearing the dinner table and she turns to him, points at her face and says "DADDY, is THIS my happy face?". Ah, they're always listening these little ones. I somewhat enjoyed hearing myself come out of her mouth but Daddy wasn't so impressed.

In other news, I'm excited to report that the weather has dipped down into the 70's. It seems a little early in the season but I'm more than happy to turn off the A/C and open up some windows. The problem with the cooling air is that Skyler has had to pull her pants out of the closet. The problem with this is that the child has grown a good two inches in the legs but I swear has become skinnier in the waste. Her choices are floods or the baggy, show-me-your-underwear-gangster-teenager look. Yesterday she put on pants that were a size 6. These were just barely okay. They came to the tops of her feet but I had to pull that elastic thing in the waist of her pants to the point that I was sure it was just going to POP the buttons off and they still sort of hung low on her boney little hips. All her size 5 pants from last winter are so short that you can see her ankle bones. They look ridiculous, especially with sneakers. Heaven forbid I convince her to wear a skirt and leggings. I have enough trouble dressing myself every day, WHY am I being made to suffer through her fashion woes?

Boots...

Want to see how I found Skyler yesterday afternoon? She was keeping Matt company in the backyard while he grilled. She had furrowed through the back of my closet and found my boots. She decided that these were the perfect accessory to go with her musical performance. Does anyone have the website for chastity belts? Anyone?

After dinner we went to Open House for the kids' school. There were two sessions so that you could meet with two teachers if you needed to except that Skyler's teacher spoke for so long that we missed Zack's teacher's presentation. This ended up okay because his teacher spent some individual time speaking with us. Matt and I are both very pleased with both teachers and are looking forward to this school year. I'm most pleased that Zack is doing gifted level work and both of the kids' teachers own children are in the gifted resources program themselves. Second grade will be doing a study of China and Ancient Egypt this year - Zack should be on board with that. He's been fascinated with China ever since the Olympics!

I'm off to research headache remedies. Mine is still pounding, this is getting old and none of the usual stuff is working!

Heat is not a good thing...

BLAH! I haven't felt inspired to write the past couple of days. We had what started out as a great weekend but quickly spiraled into the headache from hell that resulted in a lot of time spent with my head under the covers.

Saturday the kids had their first soccer games. It was supposed to be 94 degrees out so I was glad that at least Sky's game was early. The kids did great for not having played together before. Towards the end they were hot and over it. I think the coaches were too. The other team had a bit more soccer skill, but we were there for fun so hopefully our kids didn't notice too much.

This bench came in really handy. They tend not to wander off when you've got a home base. Check out Coach Daddy there in the sunglasses! He and Coach Rick did a fantastic job. Skyler is number 10 in the pony tails.

Check out the legs on this one. She reminds me of a baby horse, all legs that go for miles.

Zack was a pill throughout her game because all my attention was not on him. We have this problem with Zack and any of his sister's activities. I need to really consider a better way to handle it. Got any ideas?
Hiding his grouchy face from my camera!

Because the two games were scheduled fairly close together time wise and weren't on the same field, another of the parents drove the older kids to their game and we raced over as soon as Sky's game was done. I chose to leave my camera in the car this time. I tend to focus so hard on getting great shots that I miss Zack's best plays. This time I had so much fun watching him play with his buddies. It's amazing how far they've come together in two years. I saw four of the five goals he scored and was jumping up and down like a... well like a Mom.
By this time it was easily 94 degrees and there was no shade. We were all dripping wet and miserably HOT. For some reason my body isn't able to control temperature that well and when I get that hot I get a headache that doesn't quit... FOR DAYS. So I spent much of the rest of Saturday trying to hide in sleep and didn't get very far on Sunday either. I tried all sorts of various combinations of headache medication but nothing really worked. It's Tuesday and I've just now got the headache down to a dull roar.

I'm desperately hoping that next weekend is cooler. I might have to wrap myself in ice packs otherwise.

Election 2008 Addiction...

I'm becoming obsessed with the election. I'm constantly reading about it and discussing view points with my online imaginary friends. I've learned SO much this year.

Have you registered yet? There's not too much time left. If you haven't registered here's a great link that will guide you through the process:

Rock The Vote

Have you been tracking the electoral votes? There's a great site that maps them out and gives all sorts of other statistical information. It's fantastic for all the chart geeks out there:

Electoral-Vote

Want a native Alaskan's view of Sarah Palin? I'm slightly addicted to this blog:

Mudflats

I'm also addicted to The Daily Show, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Madow, and Bill Maher among other blogs and websites.

I hope you're keeping up with it all, this is important stuff regardless of which side you're on. I hadn't planned to discuss my personal views, just give out some places to find information, but I will post a quote that spoke to me and end with that:

"John McCain announced that he was running for president to confront the "transcendent challenge" of the 21st century, "radical Islamic extremism," contrasting it with "stability, tolerance and democracy." But the values of his handpicked running mate, Sarah Palin, more resemble those of Muslim fundamentalists than they do those of the Founding Fathers. On censorship, the teaching of creationism in schools, reproductive rights, attributing government policy to God's will and climate change, Palin agrees with Hamas and Saudi Arabia rather than supporting tolerance and democratic precepts. What is the difference between Palin and a Muslim fundamentalist? Lipstick."

Updates...

I got home yesterday and there were no more trees in my front yard. It was oddly open and airy.

That's all that's left of the one we were really worried about. That's the neighbor's house behind - she's VERY happy. Apparently it's a good thing we cut the trees down. The big one had a carpenter ant tunnel in it that went from bottom to top. Ylllyeck!

I'm still on track with my Couch to 5k program. I'm at week 3, session 2. I nearly screamed when I saw that I was going to have to run for 3 minutes twice, but I did it and then I was whooping for joy. I am SO proud of myself. This isn't the torture I thought it would be, it's a nice progression for the non-runner. I've also been doing yoga on the off days for some good stretching. My hamstrings aren't familiar with this type of activity, they need the stretch.

As my mother would say, that's all the news that's fit to print!

Coming down...

As I've mentioned before, we've got two HUGE pine trees in our front yard that are causing all sorts of problems in our driveway.

exhibit A:
Photobucket

exhibit B:
Photobucket
Right now, as I speak, there are some crazy dudes cutting them down. I'm scared to death that I'll get home and the damn things will have come crashing through my house. The funny thing is, that's why they're finally coming down. My neighbor has been so terrified of them crashing onto her house that she was willing to get the closest neighbors together to pay for it. We all went in together (they weren't both on our property). The one neighbor who actually has no ownership is the one most likely for the trees to land on and was most wanting them gone, thus she organized the whole removal.

I'll update with pictures when I get home. Let's hope it's not a picture of a big piece of tree through my roof!

Happy Birthday Honey!

We spent Friday evening and most of Saturday waiting for Hurricane Hannah but she decided not to show! We got some spitting rain and a bit of wind and that was about it. Although we were all up at 6am (WHY?), we DID get a nice family day at home enjoying each other's time. We had explained to the kids that it was going to be a family day, we weren't going anywhere and we may not even have power so we'd be doing puzzles and playing board games. The kids were glad for the power because we got to watch a couple of movies we hadn't seen yet and play Wii. It was actually really nice. The sun came out in the early evening and the kids were ready to run. Daddy went out with his buddies around 8 and Skyler passed out shortly after:
Photobucket
I'm not sure if that position was comfortable, she wasn't in it long before she was O U T. I guess the early morning caught up with her, she needs her beauty sleep. Zack and I snuggled in my bed where I got him to data dump about his week in school. I swear the only time that kid will talk is when you're letting him stay up late.

Sunday was clean up day. The kids cleaned their rooms and helped us clean up the house. They're getting good at not whining about chores. I think the allowance has helped. They're each seeing their cash add up and liking the feeling.

Mike Amy & Nate came over to celebrate Matt's birthday with us. He's 31 years old today, September 8! Happy Birthday Sweetie!

That's all the news I've got. We had a nice at home weekend. Hopefully the weather will be nice next weekend - we've already missed one weekend of soccer games!

Kindergarten Flunky...

We were driving home from soccer last night when I finally had three seconds to ask the kids how their day at school went. Zack gives me a brief rundown, then I ask Skyler "Sky, what about you, how was your day?" She replies "Mom, can I just fail Kindergarten? Can I?" I was speechless and didn't want to laugh for fear that she'd think it was a fantastic idea. The child is on her third day of school and has decided it would be a better use of her time to just flunk out. WHAT am I going to do with her?

I mentioned that soccer is starting... Matt is coaching Sky's team which so far has been SO fun. Zack's team practices right after so we get two straight hours of soccer on Thursday nights. 9 of the 12 on his team have played together going back two years. It's as much a social occasion for the parents as the kids.

Insomnia 101...

Hi, I'm Amanda and I'm an insomniac.

When you have trouble sleeping do you ever play imagination games in your head? Like, what would you do if you won millions of dollars? Like A LOT of millions of dollars? I have this whole scenario in my head where I would rent a private tropical island for a month and invite all my friends and family to come and have a free tropical vacation. The island would have a resort like atmosphere and everything would be completely free for our guests. There would be loads of activities for the kids and delicious food and bevies for the adults. I would use a service that everyone could call to make all their travel arrangements so that everyone would arrive comfortably, conveniently and in STYLE. Doesn't that sound fantastic? Be sure to stay in my Friends and Family circle, you never know when millions and millions of dollars will land in my lap.

After playing that game for awhile, tossing and turning, listening to Skyler call out in a dream, settling her back down, and tossing and turning some more, I finally fell asleep to have really weird unsettling dreams. You know the one where you're back working for your worst boss ever? And you're late for work? Yeah that was mine. I walked back into the office and immediately felt that awful feeling of hatred I had for that particular person. I immediately decided that I wanted to quit again but he wouldn't get off the phone so I could tell him. I decided that I couldn't spend another minute there so I was going to write a letter resigning (after being there like 5 minutes) and I was mortified because I couldn't get on a computer to type it so I had to write it on yellow lined paper with a pencil. It was really really awful. THEN or maybe before that I dreamed that I was married to someone else, but I couldn't stand him (think the dude in Jack Ass or someone equally juvenile and obnoxious) and I wanted to be married to Matt. Matt and I were discussing how to make that happen and one of the biggest concerns was that this other guy made really awesome real iced tea (for some reason the key to this was lime not lemon, am I on to something?). WTF? Where does the brain come up with this stuff?

I woke up exhausted and really confused. Note to self: "just take the damn ambien!"

1 down, 179 to go...

When I picked Zack up yesterday he ran over to me and said "MOM, my teacher was nice, really really nice. She was SO cool." I was really thrilled that he was that excited about her. I'm also wondering if he thought he was going to get a troll. Why are all kids programmed to think their teachers will be evil? He had a fantastic day and was all babbles and chatter as I drove him to the doctor's office. He has a sinus infection and likely Sever's Syndrome or Plantar Fasciitis. It's more likely Severe's given his age and the fact that he plays soccer. He now has to wear inserts in his sneakers and his cleats. The kid is growing and growing fast. He's completely off the CDC growth charts and will be taller than I am in no time. HE'S SEVEN!

I called home while we were waiting for Zack's prescription and I got some distracted mumbles to my inquiries about her day from Skyler. She was excited to see me when I walked through the door but then reported that Kindergarten is "BORING". She conceded that perhaps just the first day is boring.

Neither child got homework but I got two backpacks full of forms to fill out. Two kids in school, two backpacks full of forms. I was a goody goody and got them all done last night. I'd rather just get it out of the way and send it all back to school. I also gave myself a sticker on the kids' homework charts. Yay MOM!

Hopefully the rest of the year will go about the same!

First day...(sob)

I'm no longer the Mommy of a little girl. She's in Kindergarten now, she's a big girl. My heart is heavy this morning. I'm sad that there's no baby in the house anymore although I am excited for all the she'll learn this year. The change from the first day of Kindergarten to the last is remarkable. I'm just not sure I'm ready to watch her evolve that way. Emotionally I think she's a lot stronger than Zack was at this age. She'll do fine in that regard. I guess I'm scared to lose how close we are. Her friends will start being more important to her and Mom will lose some serious ground. I know I've always got a place with Zack, I'm just not as sure with Skyler.

Here are a few pictures from this morning. Skyler opted for black leggings (instead of the pink ones I picked out) to go with her black dress/shirt. Amy joked that if she palms my black eyeliner on the way out the door we can be sure she's going goth.

Zack wouldn't take a pic with his sister. I'll force bribe them later this afternoon.

Oh and wouldn't you know it, I swear this kid is more like me everyday. Zack has had a really rough summer for allergies. He's been on double doses of allergy meds and finally last night he looked like he had two black eyes and said his head hurt when he blew his nose. I'm thinking sinus infection. Thankfully his pediatrician is the awesome and despite this being a super busy day was happy to see him at 4:15. I bet Mom is thinking "what goes around comes around" as I was sick for my first day of school pretty much every year. She had to pick me up for several of them. I'm thankful Zack wasn't a nervous wreck this morning like I usually was, but I do want to kick these allergies in the butt!
