She's Seven...

Seven years ago today the sweetest baby girl entered the world.

This year she got to celebrate her birthday a week early with her Aunt Shelle (who kindly shares her birthday with Skyler).

Happy Birthday Girls!

Ho. Not the Ho-Ho That You Eat and Not Ho-Ho-Ho From Santa Claus. HO...

I took the kids to the grocery store with me Tuesday, something I try my best never to do. We were there to get milk and cereal and nothing else because we were at the closer to the house but much more expensive grocery store. By the time I had walked from one end of the store to the other we, of course, had much more than milk and cereal, I had yelled at them numerous times, made a trip to the bathroom, been burned with lava because I walked on the wrong colored tiles, and was probably about to spend four times what I had planned on spending. So I stop my cart in front of the registers and am trying to think. The kids are browsing through the magazines. Zack walks back over, interrupts my thought process and says:

"Mom, do people who look like they are going to be naked for sex get money and are called Ho's?"

*blink blink blink*

Smiley

Me: What did you say? Wait. Remember what you were going to say and lets talk about this in the car okay? I'll answer you but let's do it in the car.

Then I look up and see that he had caught site of this:

Holy SHIT people! He is eight years old. I am not ready for these conversations even though I knew exactly where this was coming from. Zack has a buddy that is the same age, but HE has a brother who is thirteen. K is a nice polite kid that I enjoy having over, his brother is Eddie Haskell.

So we get in the car and I get the gist of what Zack is asking even though I can't believe that he's even got these ideas on his radar. Basically Zack is aware of what sex is (we had the talk last year or the year before THAT was fun). He's also aware of sexy or hot, he's a boy. His friend had informed him that a Ho is someone who has sex for money (thank you Eddie Haskell). He wanted to know if all girls that are on magazines (IN THE GROCERY STORE) are Hos (even though he doesn't entirely understand what that means). Good gracious I was tip-toeing through all of that. I want him to come to me and ask any question he can think of. I don't want him to rely on the Eddie Haskells of the world to inform him of what's what. But we should get some sort of warning or something. The stumbling and the fumbling and the fact that Skyler was with us was just HORRIBLE. I ended this highly educational moment with the reminder that these are grown-up thoughts and grown-up words and that I didn't want him talking about them. That other parents would certainly not appreciate him teaching their child these new words but that he could ask me anything in the whole wild world and I would do my best to explain it to him.

Now my Mother is reading this (Hi Mom!) thinking you told him WHAT? But really Mom, it's better if we just talk about it. Shutting him up will only encourage him to try to figure it out on his own and frankly his computer skills scare me. ;-)

Ms. Chloe...

How gorgeous is my new niece?

Wednesday's Word and Blah Blah Blah...

I haven't blogged in a week (you're saying "thanks for pointing out the obvious") and I'm feeling rather blah about it. We went away this past weekend for some extra extended family visiting and now that we're home we're sort of in a funk. We miss our family that is far away and we're all having trouble getting into the swing of things. You'd think our trip would give me plenty of blog fodder but whenever we come back from visiting I don't feel like talking about it (that would be sadness Amanda). I'll post some pictures when I get them edited.

One bright light in the past couple of days has been getting the kids' report cards. They did even better than last quarter. I couldn't be prouder of them. It's my job as Mom to brag and gush. Neither of them remembered much (yet) about the deal we had last quarter and I'm glad because I'd owe Zack $25 and Skyler $46. Holy crap good grades are expensive. I may give it to them anyway. They certainly worked hard.

Now for Wednesday's word:

hypnagogic: Of, pertaining to, or occurring in the state of drowsiness preceding sleep.

I can tell you this, driving in the car for twelve hours with the sun shining in and Matt driving is hypnagogic for me. I took two naps on Monday and would have taken more had the three other passengers not decided that the exact moment of my best REM sleep was the best moment to rock out to Black Eyed Peas. Love them, I do.

Oh I have a trivia question for you!

How many CD rotations of The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, The Zack Brown Band, and Pink in a twelve hour period does it take to make Mommy's ears bleed?

Happy Birth Day Chloe...

My new sweet baby niece Chloe was born this morning. I can't wait to meet her. Matt and I are going to have a fight to decide who gets to hold her first!!! Thanks to technology I got not only a picture but a video of her within an hour of her birth. It was so wonderful to hear her little voice. I'll wait until her parents, Ben & Shelle, post a picture before I do it here. Take it from this proud Aunt, she's adorable!

Augmentin is my Friend...

After my coworkers starting spraying lysol in my general direction I decided to call the doctor. Is anyone surprised to learn that I have a sinus infection? Me neither. He also informed me that the meds I'm taking for RA have suppressed my immune system but that I'll adjust eventually and won't always be this oh so attractive body of hacking, feverish, snot.

I'm currently drinking a hot cup of tea AND a glass of orange juice over ice. I couldn't decide and both are anecdotally good for the symptoms of a cold so there you have it.

I'm hoping to start a new book this weekend. I just haven't decided what that book will be. Push just came up on my list at the library so that will probably be it. I also want to read one of Zack's books The Lightning Thief. I told him he had to finish it before I'd take him to see the movie. He's about half way through and stalled so I thought if I read it too we could discuss and I could urge him on. I got him the Guide to the Books and Movie which had sections on each characters and collectible cards and that has re-spurned his interest as it asks all sorts of questions about which god you come from and what your abilities would be. I'm all for anything that will keep my kids reading. Boxes from amazon show up at our door weekly. I also think it's a good idea for us, as parents, to read the books they're reading. So, in conclusion, we have the choice between a horribly abused child or one that is the half-blood son of the gods. Definitely two different moods huh?

Wednesday Word...

I have no words on my pad. I've been so sick this week that I haven't been thinking straight. Not even words could penetrate the thick barrier of snot my brain has formed. I can't think beyond "blow nose" let alone learn something. SO, I give you a little tidbit from biology 101. Virus.

Virus: an ultramicroscopic (20 to 300 nm in diameter), metabolically inert, infectious agent that replicates only within the cells of living hosts, mainly bacteria, plants, and animals: composed of an RNA or DNA core, a protein coat, and, in more complex types, a surrounding envelope.

Since I'm such a nice blog writer, I'll even give you a picture:

Virus. I haz lots of em. They have taken over and I'm fairly certain at this point that they might win.

A Blogger Named Amanda...

I was just scrolling through my Google Reader and realized that I read an unusual number of blogs written by someone with the name Amanda. I rarely ever meet anyone named Amanda so how did I come upon so many blogs written by Amandas? And was it just coincidence that I liked them and added them to my google reader or is there some subconscious love for all things Amanda? Interesting.

Here are some other great Amandas that write blogs:

Sometimes...Life Doesn't Suck

Okay, well four doesn't seem like a lot, but really, there just aren't that many Amandas in the world and with me that makes five. Five Amanda bloggers. Clearly it takes little to entertain me.

You Might Want to Spray this Post with Lysol...

Hi! I'm here. After the Novocaine wore off last Wednesday the sore throat that was sort of hanging around kicked in full force and I've been SICK ever since. I made it through work on Thursday and then spent the next three days in bed. I crawled into work today (because we all know that even though they say stay home if you're sick, they don't really mean it) but am questioning if that was a good idea. Let's see if I can make it to lunchtime.

Thank fsm for kids who can feed themselves and husbands who deliver food to you in bed every so often.

*cough cough*
